INTENTIONAL LIVING IN 2019

The start of 2019 is just around the corner and now is the time to start thinking about new years resolutions and setting our intentions for the year 2019.

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS SOMETIMES FAIL

For a lot of people, new years resolutions just don’t work for a few simple reasons. I think the main reason they don’t work is we tent to have high expectations of ourselves right from the beginning of the journey. In order to succeed we need to accept that it is also ok to fail, and fail, and fail again because that is where the learning comes from. As long as you give it a shot and try your best and keep trying one day you just might get there, but if you stop the first time you fail you never will.

RESOLUTIONS AND INTENTIONS

A fun fact is that people tend to use the word resolution and intention interchangeably when there are some slight differences in the words.

A Resolution, defined by Google:

The action of solving a problem, dispute, or contentious matter.

An Intention, defined by Google:

A thing intended; an aim or plan.

Both words mean taking action and can be used in a new year planning context. When you make a new years resolution you want to solve a problem that has been bothering you for the new year. When you set an intention for the new year, you want to make a goal for that coming year. Both are important because going into a new year with old problems is never fun, and having new goals to keep life fresh is great.

IDEAS FOR NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS AND INTENTIONS

These are just five of my own intentions for the coming year. I am sticking with five with that is an easy number and I also stick to the theme of getting healthy.

Learn to Sleep Properly

Sleep is important to everyday life and I think we can all agree that at the best of times we don’t get enough of it. There are a lot of resources out there for improving your sleep, such as books and entire blogs dedicated to how to get a better nights sleep.

Create a Startup and Shutdown Routine

These routines are the parts of the day just after you wake up and just before you go to bed. They will let your brain and body know when it is time to be awake and when it is time to relax and drift off to sleep.

Keeping a Journal

This is not only great for looking back on later in life, but it can also be great for keeping track of your mental health. There is no wrong or right way to keep a journal, so what you include is up to you and you can also use it as a creative outlet.

Going Vegan

I am doing this for a few reasons. As I have talked about before I am doing it for the animals and the environment, but also for my health. Animal products just don’t make me feel good at all. Eating healthier, in general, can never hurt, even if you are not a vegan or a vegetarian.

Getting Social

Getting out there and being social is great for your mental health. It is far better for you to get out once a day and leave your house and get some air then it is to spend all of that time inside alone. Seeing other people is how we build our support systems and learn and grow. Our friends can pick us up when we are feeling down, and help us out when we need it most.
